Branch from the Past
1–2 minutes

In the late ’80s, route 17 in West Windsor, New York, was a four-lane, at grade, 55-mph, limited access highway that you and your cousins regularly crossed to get to Skate World or to the elementary school. At the intersection of your main street and the literal highway stood the old Red and White Store. It’s where you bought penny candy and, after you grew up a bit, where you’d pick up stacks of the Press and Sun to deliver. All of this would be bulldozed in the 2000s to make way for the new interstate 86.

A recent stroll through Branchport, New York, triggers a core memory. The Red and White Store lives on as a general store to transcend the ages. Where you can pick up an emergency jug of milk or a loaf of bread on your way home. Upstate New York’s ancient version of the corner bodega made manifest at the tip of Keuka Lake’s western branch.
