Ready, Aim, Marry Me!

Fall is prime wedding season. Not so hot that the bride melts before the ceremony; not so cold that everyone is stuck inside. Leaves start to turn and curl, but the sky is an infinite powder blue. You remember your own wedding ceremony on a bright Saturday in October — how the world paused, silent, as your travel companion stepped politely down the makeshift aisle on top of a hill in a city far away, her dress glowing in the late afternoon light — how you could not take your eyes off her except to glance quickly upwards toward the clouds, trying to hide the pools forming in each eye.

If you had lived around Conesus Lake back then, you might have reserved the Avon Inn for your wedding. A national historic landmark dating back to 1840, the Inn has served as an iconic welcome point for those entering the Village of Avon from the east. Its classic Greek revivalist architecture — renovated in recent years after a disastrous fire — proudly stands in defiance of time’s never-ending march. The Inn hosted many of history’s fabulously well-to-do over the decades, from the Roosevelts to Rochester’s George Eastman to Katherine Hepburn, but it has always catered to the hoi polloi as well. If you’re lucky enough to get invited to a wedding this fall, make sure it’s at the Avon Inn. Check it out while taking a stroll around Avon’s beautiful village circle or click the link below for other landmarks around Conesus Lake and beyond.
